Wiring:

  • +5V (positive power supply)

  • Trig (control) RX

  • Echo (reception) TX

  • GND (negative power supply)

Basic Operating Principle:

  1. Use the TRIG pin of the IO port to trigger distance measurement with a high-level signal of at least 10 µs.

  2. The module automatically sends eight 40 kHz square wave signals and detects the presence of a return signal.

  3. When a return signal is detected, the IO port ECHO outputs a high level. The duration of the high level corresponds to the time taken for the ultrasonic wave to travel to the target and back, divided by 2.

This module is simple to use: the port sends a high-level signal longer than 10 µs, then waits for a high-level output at the receiving port. The timer starts once the output begins and stops when the port returns to low level, which corresponds to the measurement time. Use this time to calculate the distance. Continuous measurement cycles can provide dynamic measurement values.

The ultrasonic timing diagram shows that only a trigger pulse longer than 10 µs is required. The internal module sends eight cycles at 40 kHz and detects the return wave. The echo output is generated once the return signal is detected. The pulse width of the echo is proportional to the measured distance.

Distance Calculation Formula:

  • Distance (cm) = US / 58

  • Distance (inches) = US / 148

  • Or: Distance = (maximum duration × speed of sound (340 m/s)) / 2

Recommended Test Cycle: Greater than 60 ms to avoid transmission overlap affecting the echo signal.
